Wooden Floors and Sofas: How to Balance Warm Tones in Your Home

Wood floors set the mood for a room. Learn how to pair them with a sofa, rug and other furniture so the tones work together.

A wooden floor gives a room warmth, but it also affects every piece of furniture you place on it. The key to a good look is balance: not everything should be the same shade of wood.

Choose a Sofa with Contrast

If your floor is warm brown, a sofa in a lighter or cooler colour, such as grey, cream or soft blue, creates a pleasant contrast. A sofa that is too close to the floor colour can make the room feel flat.

Add a Rug to Separate Zones

A rug under the seating area defines the space and softens the look of a large wooden floor. Pick a rug with a light or neutral base so it lifts the room.

Mix Wood Tones Carefully

  • Keep the floor and large furniture in the same warm family.
  • Use one or two accent pieces in a slightly different tone.
  • Repeat a tone at least twice in the room so it looks planned.

Use Cushions and Throws

Cushions and throws are an easy way to bring in colour without changing the furniture. Choose two or three colours and repeat them.

Do Not Forget the Light

Natural light brings out the grain of the wood. Keep windows clear and use light curtains where possible.
